The Era of Transcendence

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "‎A mind once stretched by an idea, never returns to its original dimensions." And to really use your minds, we need to get out of our heads. To see the world that will be; not bound by what it is.

Today, we're living in era, when while trying to expand outwards, you end up expanding inwards. The era of transcendence. The era where technology is us. And it renders our dreams into our being.

Here's a fantastic article and video about Human Cyborgs. The Bionic Age Is No Longer A Distant Dream. It's Here.

There's no better time than now for the Human Operating System.

Ideas - the new replicators... from genes to memes...

"Ideas are powerful because they allow us to see the world as it could be, rather than what it is," says Jason Silva. "Today, ideas take the form of information files, binary bits, 1's and 0's. We create media and launch it into the world, capable of instant consumption and real impact."

Learning to solve mankind's issues from our own biology...

In religious scriptures, we, in our mutual love, mercy and compassion, are said to be like one body: if one organ complains, the rest of the body develops a fever. If one organ becomes sick, then the other members of this one body take care of the sick one.

We are biologically attuned to empathy and taking action to fix that which is wrong.

Given the state of affairs the world finds itself in today, each one of us, through what little voice we have, are creating a bigger collective awareness, if nothing else. For the sickness of injustice and unfair pain and suffering.

So respect to all who feel that sickness; respect to all who have a voice and are speaking out.

Why good leaders make you feel safe

"We call them leaders because they go first. We call them leaders because they take the risk before anybody else does. We call them leaders because they will choose to sacrifice so that their people may be safe and protected and so their people may gain, and when we do, the natural response is that our people will sacrifice for us. They will give us their blood and sweat and tears to see that their leader's vision comes to life, and when we ask them, "Why would you do that? Why would you give your blood and sweat and tears for that person?" they all say the same thing: 'Because they would have done it for me.' And isn't that the organization we would all like to work in?"

Conquering our fear of death.

"To leave something behind, something outstanding and wondrous, be it our children, poems, stories, inventions or living an altruistic life; these we create, these ideas we give birth to cries out to the stars our very existence through generations yet to be born, saying we were here, we made a difference..."

Learning from a honeybee

Friends and folks, it’s time to learn humanity from a bee.
You’re thinking I am probably bonkers with that statement. While I won’t confirm or deny that, I assure you that the following article is based on an intense bout of research.

The thing is, as advertisers, we are constantly people of thought and analysis – looking at hard facts and data, observing trends, researching, learning, innovating, and the like. But when was the last time, we just put down our surveys and looked around us to imbibe, observe and learn through curiosity? The two reasons I expanded my lens of thinking and analysis, were my daughter and the bee. Random? Not really.

Three months after birth, my daughter (now 19 months) was diagnosed with severe neutropenia (very low immunity to illnesses). We were given the ‘Wait & Watch’ prescription, but instead of waiting for things to watch out for, my wife tried giving our baby a spoonful of Manuka honey (known for its healing benefits) every night. Today my daughter is growing up as healthy as any other child and falling sick as often as them too.

Now, that fascinated me. Man-made medicine couldn’t do much to help, but something a honeybee created, did. And I was hooked to this power of healing that came from this little creature. I started reading about honeybees and watching videos about their habits and what they can teach us, with the passion of an apiarist. Suffice it to say that the wife was worried. But she didn’t know that these new facts and figures can help inspire humanity.

And here’s how I reached that conclusion – Let’s pit MAN against BEE in a challenge to see who is more human. Who do you think would win?

MAN VS BEE ROUND 1
THE PURSUIT
When a Bee goes to a bed of flowers, it ignores the immature ones, the bad ones or the flowers that have already been fed off. It only seeks the purest, freshest and the cleanest.
Now when we are in pursuit of sustenance, or the business we are going for, the money we are going to make, and the people we are going to hire, we aren’t always looking for the highest and purest quality. We don’t employ people who think fresh, and instead, get those who are invariably caught up in a web of politics, corruption or greed.

ROUND 1 GOES TO BEE.

MAN VS BEE ROUND 2
THE TRANSACTION

Even though the bee shares a transactional relationship with the flower it pollinates, it will always give a lot more than it takes. And what it gives makes the life of the flower better. If you observe a bee about to eat from a flower, you will see that it keeps hovering gently over the flower, so as to not put its entire weight on the most delicate part of the flower. Now the bee is relatively heavy for something as delicate as a flower. Watch how it shows its compassion. It sits but it doesn’t break. It puts demands but it doesn’t break. What a great way to eat. What a great way to live.

That analogy writes itself. Are we putting too much pressure on our people, our families, our suppliers and our consumers?  We have to ask these questions. As an industry, we have relationships with people but we keep demanding incessantly until the people that love us (our own employees, our consumers, our families, our community) break.

(HINT: Social media folks! It is time to stop asking people to upload videos or share a story to have a chance to win a trip abroad. Make your brands help people live better.)

LOOKS LIKE BEE WINS ROUND TWO, TOO.

MAN VS BEE ROUND 3
THE ETHICS

Do bees steal food from other bees? Do they see another bee eating from its flower and say, “Hey, let me go mess it up for him!” Do they sift through the waste paper bins of other bees looking for discarded ideas they can steal? Well, no. Bees recognize the fact that everyone is entitled to the sustenance that they have.  So, it moves away to another flower that hasn’t been touched yet.
If someone opens up a new creative shop, most big advertising houses go after the new guy and take its clients leaving it to struggle and ultimately, fade away. In truth, there are plenty of other places we can go. We don’t have to take the food of someone’s plate to fill our plates. The world is big enough for all of us. But the Mean Girls (Men) that we are, we choose to steal.

BEES WIN HANDS DOWN WHEN IT COMES TO ETHICS.

MAN VS BEE ROUND 4
COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Collectively, bees travel nearly 55,000 miles and visit two million flowers in a day to gather enough nectar to make just a pound of honey. When our bee comes back to its hive, it does a peculiar dance, hovering around the hive. This dance informs its fellow bees about the navigation path and the coordinates directing them to the area where this bee got its food. It therefore, helps them pollinate too, so they can nourish themselves. This ONE bee helps the community get nourished and richer. The bee recognizes that it cannot build a hive by itself. It has to do it together with the other bees.

And what do we do when we see someone successful and doing well? We get jealous. And if we’re doing well, we make sure we don’t share our secrets with someone else.

We live in such a competitive and selfish culture in today's world, that most of us refuse to be generous with the ones we mentor and lead. Young talent loves trainings, loves travelling and meeting new minds from around the world, loves shining at these trainings; it's one of the best forms of motivation and employee retention - contrary to what most believe. Maybe 5 years down the line they’ll make more money than us? We don’t want them to have fancier cars than us! We don’t even think a Mercedes would match their annoying Hipster vibe.

Unlike the bee that helps others, when we’re busy creating work that matters, we don’t have time for the people who matter.

AND YET AGAIN THE BEE WINS…

So in 4 (seemingly pointless) rounds, it is easy to see that the miniscule creature - the bee - is way more significant and bigger than us .

Just like us, this bee is earning its livelihood, it has relationships, but it is not only benefitting itself, but also its community and the environment around it.
And it is their joint efforts that create the very honey that heals people, including my daughter thousands of miles away. Such an amazing power of healing can come from that little effort.

We all know that humanity has gone sick and it needs healing. Especially in our industry.

If a community of bees can heal ailments around the world, imagine what a community of powerful advertisers and even more powerful brands and clients can do? If we can be like the bees and work, live and create a harmonious community, we don’t just benefit and heal each other, we benefit and heal mankind. Advertising for a greater good, is a result of that.

The way the bee eats, it produces more life. The way we work today, and the way we consume today, we don’t produce more life. What we manufacture is more pollution, intoxication, social waste and economic waste… Mankind has gone greedy, eating for itself with everybody wanting something for him or herself. Looking to be number 1. Eating this planet alive. And the biggest tragedy of this world is that those very honey bees of the world are disappearing every year.

Let us learn to consume like the bee, so we make our world better. Have your share of the pie but it doesn’t mean that it should cost the world. It doesn’t mean that it should cost the next generation.

It’s time to create more than just ‘buzz’ for our brands and more ‘hives’ in our community. Okay, no more ‘bee’ puns. All I’m trying to say is with just a few pointers from our little friends, we can make the world better, with little efforts, and truly ‘bee’ all that we can ‘bee’.

Sorry, I couldn’t resist that last one.

The Truth About The Truth

The Truth Hurts.
The Truth Rights.

The Truth Defends.
The Truth Mends.

The Truth Reminds.
The Truth Surprises.

The Truth Destroys.
The Truth Endears.

The Truth Screams.
The Truth Liberates.

The Truth is Revolutionary.

"In times of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." Thus spake George Orwell.

Strategic planners in advertising are the ones who tell the truth about the people in the brief. In an increasingly superficial and fairly repetitive land of briefs, refreshing truths seem very revolutionary!

But, the truth is not obvious, nor is it easy to find. Hence, it must be uncovered. The truth is, that the truth is out there, and not on Google or on some machine. Ever wondered why birds stay in the same place when they can fly anywhere on the earth?

It's a jungle of brands out there, and the truth isn't always obvious or easy to find. Speaking of jungles, the lion is one of my favourite creatures (doesn't have everything to do with me being a Leo; trust me!).

Now, to echo the thoughts of Jim Stengel (CMO of P&G), if you want to study a lion at its truest, where do you go? You don't go to the zoo or to made-up nature parks. You don't pat the lion and expect him to behave the way he would naturally, if he is surrounded by coffee, soft drinks, cookies and moderators. You understand his behavior the best when he is out there in the wild, in his natural environment, at his best, with his loved ones doing the things he likes, and in his extremes, with strangers, sometimes at his ugliest...

For all you gamers out there, who have played Assassin's Creed III, you would've placed yourself in the shoes of the leading Assassin, Connor Kenway hunting for game in the great wilderness.

Once he has observed the prey he is about to kill, he doesn't just chase it blindly. He follows it, he tracks it thoroughly, through the forests in the great frontier. It's a difficult chase, it's not your one size fits all type of chase. Then once he's set on the prey and knows what he wants to do with it, he sets the plan, he designs the path that's specifically suited for that prey. And then he goes for the kill and gets the meat he needs to survive in the game. He doesn't go to one of those roadside inns for food for his survival. He does so in the wild.

Being a strategic planner in today's jungle of brands and advertising, means being a hunter in that very jungle to uncover untold truths. And I don't mean people watching. It's about being more active. It's about setting the bait, testing behavior, challenging them, hurting them, reminding them, mending them, surprising them, defending them, liberating them... design a plan that fits all types of game and all types of chases.

And become the master hunter.

The dreamers of the day

I had a conversation with Thomas Edward Lawrence the other day when he spoke to me and said, "All people dream, but not equally," and continued..."Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the morning to find that it was vanity. But, the dreamers of the day are dangerous, for they dream their dreams with open eyes, and make them come true."

He was a famous man, a scholar, an archaeologist, a lieutenant-colonel in the British Army, and a prolific writer.
I am none of those - yet! But, he resonated with me.

Because like him, I believe in seeing dreams to fruition. Some of my own have been realized over the years. While MANY others are still in the making. And a few haven't been dreamed of yet.

And that's the beauty of dreaming, isn't it? It has no limits.

Don't dream at nights.

A Deluded Fantasy?

What if someone said to an embryo in the womb,

"Outside of your world of black nothing
is a miraculously ordered universe;
a vast Earth covered with tasty food;
mountains, oceans, and plains,
fragrant orchards and fields full of crops;
a luminous sky beyond your reach,
with a sun, moonbeams, and uncountable stars;
and there are winds from south, north, and west,
and gardens replete with sweet flowers
like a banquet at a wedding fest.
The wonders of this world are beyond description.
What are you doing living in a dark prison,
drinking blood through that narrow tube?"

But, the womb-world is all an embryo knows
and it would not be particularly impressed
by such amazing tales, saying dismissively:
"You're crazy. That is all a deluded fantasy."

In his quest to explain the brilliance as well as the existence of the Almighty and His Creations, Rumi has actually shared a very good message for us creatives in advertising today!

How many times do we hear an unbelievable/incomprehensible idea and deem it too complex/too difficult/impossible to execute?

How many times does an idea scare us?

How many times are we content living in our own comfort zone? And are not treading the territories seldom trodden?

How many times do we really go with our gut instinct and not the restrictions others or we, ourselves, put on our individual capacity to be creative?

Bottom-line: Don't be an embryo in the womb.

Learning storytelling about stories from movies!

Love the way movies promote themselves.

Check out the latest X-Men website: 25 Moments

Advertising and brands have a lot to learn about the way they tell the story before the actual story!

Trailers, promotions, stunts, virals, websites all lead in beautifully to the actual film; often telling a story by themselves too.

You Made Me a Father

Came across this beautiful video which I could relate to as a husband to my wife who has been a fantastic mother to our little daughter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZq62c82-h4

And it got me thinking. There isn't much advertising out there celebrating Dads!

Without getting competitive, we do a lot too you know!

So, I thought I'd rephrase the manifesto/script of that same video and see how it'd work for Dads. Here goes...

I felt you. You were a pea. Then a lemon. Then an eggplant.
I followed advice. I tried to read the books. I quit spicy food to support your mother .
Could you tell I was anxious and expectant?
I talked to you, sang to you... I wasn't ready.
But then you were here. Ten toes. Eight pounds. Love. Big fat love.
I held you. I fed you.
I realized that I would spend my every spare moment, hey even my life doing things to make you happy -- and that that would make me happy.
And then there are the times I want to give up. You've made me rethink my sanity. You've made me want to fall on my parent's feet and tell them that I get it. That I love them.
But then you smile and you say my name -- and you grab my hand with those little fingers.
We're growing together. We are seeing the world like it's new. I will open my heart and love will rain down all over you. You'll giggle, and I'll do it all over again. And we will walk hand in hand. Until you let go.
I made you, but you made me a father.

Sounds just as beautiful. Someone should make this for Dads too :)
Here's one I would love to do for the upcoming Father's Day...
The insight: Fathers are the assigned family photographers. Capturing beautiful moments of their kid being a kid, their wife with their kid, their kid with their respective sibling, their kids with other kids, and many more. Many a time, being on the other side of the camera. Seldom being in front of it.

The idea: To the man behind the camera. Happy Father's Day.
